Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some common questions about KU's diagnostic ultrasound program.

What are the requirements and process for admission to the program?
Everything needed for the application can be found in the how to apply section.

What is the application deadline?
The priority deadline for applications is February 1. However, applications continue to be accepted until the next class is filled.

Is the background check required when applying to the program?
No, not during the application process. Students are required to follow the background check procedure once accepted into the program and complete it before enrolling in classes.

For the prerequisite requirements, can I take a combined anatomy and physiology course? What if I only took a single combined anatomy/physiology course — do I have to take a second course to fulfill the requirement?
You may take a combined anatomy and physiology course; however, the course must be a minimum of 5 credit hours in order to fulfill the anatomy and physiology requirement. If the course does not meet the 5 credit hour minimum, an additional combined anatomy/physiology course (e.g. anatomy and physiology II) or a separate physiology course is required.

Do I need to have completed all the required prerequisites before I apply?
Students may still be enrolled in prerequisite course work during the application period. All prerequisites must be completed before the start of the program in the fall. Students with more than 6 credit hours of prerequisite course work remaining by the summer prior to the fall semester start may not be eligible for admission.

I am an international student and English is my primary spoken language. Am I required to provide English language proficiency exam scores?
Yes. Please see our requirements for international students on the eligibility page.

I already have a degree, but it's not from a U.S. college or university. What steps do I need to take?
You must have all non-U.S. transcripts evaluated by WES or ECE and the report sent to the KU Office of the Registrar. Please see the information for international applicants page for more details about this procedure.

When does the program begin and finish?
The program has one intake of students in the fall semester (August) of each academic year. Students will graduate in May of their second year in the program.

How much does the program cost?
Find details on the costs and financial aid page. Tuition and fees are subject to change every year. There are additional campus and course fees.

Are financial aid and scholarships available?
Yes. Please check the costs and financial aid page for details. More information is available from the school's scholarships page.

How do I apply for student loans?
All student loans must be obtained through KU Medical Center and not your current school. This includes students currently attending the KU Lawrence campus. For student loan opportunities, assistance and forms, please visit the Office of the Registrar website.

Can I work while in the program?
Due to the program's heavy courseload, students should carefully consider their academic schedule before accepting any employment options.

Is health insurance required?
All students are required to have health insurance. The student health services office on campus has information about insurance policies for students.

What attire is required while in class?
Currently, students are required to wear solid black scrubs (without printed figures) embroidered with the department's name. Additional information is provided upon acceptance into the program.

What on-campus housing options are available for students?
