Information for Clients
We encourage clients to review the information below. If you have a question that isn't covered here, please feel free to give us a call.
What does a clinical driving assessment involve?
Usually, an assessment requires one visit. Visual, physical and cognitive testing is performed during the assessment. Driving performance and brake-reaction time will be evaluated on a driving simulator.
Often a determination is made during the initial visit. However, occasionally an additional session will be requested for a practical, behind-the-wheel assessment.
What do I bring to my appointment?
- Map/parking instructions (details below)
- Appointment letter
- Glasses, contact lenses or any visual aids
- Driver’s license
- List of medications
- Payment
- Please dress in comfortable clothes
How long will the appointment last?
Visits usually take three hours for a standard driving evaluation.
Watch
With support from a grant from the Parkinson's Foundation, the lab has produced two brief educational videos. The first video shows practical tips and tricks for older individuals to safely enter and exit a car. The second video shows the portions of a fitness to drive assessment at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Referrals
To ensure clients are medically able to undergo evaluation, a referral from a physician is required prior to first appointment at this clinic. To request a fitness to drive evaluation, ask your primary health care provider to complete this driving referral form.
