Driving and Mobility Services Clinic
Driving is an imporant part of life for many people in the U.S., and the share of drivers older than 65 years of age is projected to increase to 25% by 2025. At the Driving and Mobility Services Clinic, we aim to rehabilitate drivers and assess fitness to drive.
Expert faculty and researchers work together in the clinic to provide personalized assessments and driving evaluations to advise clients on driving safety and possible vehicle modifications.
Services
Each client receives a personalized assessment and intervention plan, which may include the following:
-
Clinical driving evaluation using simulator (driving performance assessment, brake-reaction time, examine skills relevant to driving).
-
Advice on vehicle modifications and equipment aids; for example, wide-angled mirrors to improve visibility.
-
Driving rehabilitation programs offer strategies on how to overcome difficulties with driving.
-
Advice on alternative modes of transportation available.
-
Practical, behind-the-wheel assessment, as needed.
Referrals
To ensure clients are medically able to undergo evaluation, a referral from a physician is required prior to first appointment at this clinic.
To request a fitness to drive evaluation, ask your primary health care provider to complete this driving referral form.
The Process
Upon identification of a driving need or concern:
-
Physician sends referral to Driving and Mobility Services Clinic at KU Medical Center.

Clinic staff contact client to schedule driving assessment.
-
After initial driving assessment, additional simulation and/or evaluation may be recommended, including time spent behind-the-wheel of a vehicle on the road.
