Clinical Education
Unparalleled clinical education opportunities in KU's Master of Science in Athletic Training.
The clinical curriculum of KU's master of science in athletic training provides you the opportunity to translate essential knowledge and skills into the clinical environment. Clinical education is embedded across the program and includes athletic training clinical experiences as well as simulation and supplemental clinical experiences.
The clinical curriculum component begins in the second semester of your program and culminates in a semester-long immersive clinical experience in the final semester. Initially, you will complete integrated clinical education (ICE) courses at local partnering facilities. These opportunities occur concurrently with didactic coursework. ICE courses offer immediate ways to translate the athletic training knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to a variety of practice settings and patient populations. ICE encompasses athletic training and supplemental clinical experiences, as well as simulation.
As part of ICE, you may complete a series of simulations to develop clinical reasoning and interprofessional skills in authentic practice scenarios and settings through KU Medical Center’s state-of-the-art Health Education Building and experiential learning programs.
In year two, students will add clinical experience (CE) courses. These courses are full-time immersive experiences of varying lengths, which allow you to experience the totality of life as an athletic trainer in a variety of settings. Because of the full-time nature, these immersive experiences may be done outside of the Kansas City area. Students will receive approximately 25 weeks of immersive experience over the two-year program.
