Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about KU’s hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy program? We gathered the most common questions we hear from our applicants.

Q. How many students are accepted into the hybrid pathway each year?

A. The target enrollment for the hybrid pathway is 60 students, mirroring the on-campus pathway. However, in its inaugural year, the program aims to admit approximately 30 students.

Q. What will the lab immersions look like?

A. Lab immersions will vary in length, typically ranging between 3-7 days (not including travel), and generally occur 1-2 times per semester. These immersive sessions will consist of full days focused on lab practice, hands-on instruction and assessments such as skills checks and practical exams. Additionally, lab immersions may feature special events and celebrations, creating opportunities for connection and celebration. Some immersions will also incorporate interprofessional education and simulation activities to enhance collaborative learning and clinical preparedness. See the lab schedule on the curriculum page.

Q. Will I be responsible for my own lodging and travel?

A. Yes. Students are responsible for arranging and paying for their own lodging and travel during lab immersions. There are hotels and rental properties available within a two-mile radius of campus. A list of lodging options will be included in the welcome packet provided by the department. To minimize costs and foster collaboration, students are encouraged to coordinate with others in their cohort.

Q. What costs are the student’s responsibility?

A. Students are responsible for covering their travel, lodging, food and other expenses during lab immersions. The university cannot pay or reimburse you for these costs.

Q. How will exams be administered? Do I need to be in-person for exams?

A. Exams will be administered in a variety of formats. Some will be conducted remotely, while others will take place at the testing center on the KU Medical Center campus during lab immersions. Most lab-based exams will be incorporated into the lab immersions. Specific details for each exam will be provided in advance to ensure students can plan accordingly.

Q. Will I be able to complete clinical experiences where I live?

A. Integrated clinical experiences are typically conducted at local partnering facilities near the KU Medical Center campus or, for hybrid pathway students, it may be in their regional location. Full-time clinical experiences are offered at more than 250 sites across the United States and internationally, providing opportunities that may align with your location. While student preferences are considered, clinical placements depend on site availability and program requirements.

Q. What kind of sites can I complete my clinical experiences at?

A. Clinical experiences encompass a variety of settings, including inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers and specialized facilities. The program emphasizes broad exposure to different practice areas to develop well-rounded physical therapists. The program requires completion of 9 weeks of inpatient experience and 9 weeks of orthopedic or general outpatient experience.

Q. Can I complete my clinical experience where I work or have worked?

A. Completing clinical experiences at a current or former place of employment is discouraged to ensure a diverse learning environment and to avoid potential conflicts of interest. It is important to discuss specific circumstances with the director of clinical education.

Q. What options will I have if I am not able to complete integrated clinical experiences near my home?

A. If you are not able to complete them near your home, integrated clinical experience placements may be arranged by the program and are typically near campus. There will be arranged opportunities available in conjunction with lab immersions if needed for students in the hybrid pathway.
