KU's certificate program in health informatics moved to the Department of Health Information Management, effective August 1, 2025. Since the program requirements have been updated, current health informatics students should refer to the KU Academic Catalog for information as you finish your certificate from the School of Nursing.

About the Certificate Program

The graduate certificate in health informatics is an online certificate program that focuses on the design and use of health information technology to store, manage and analyze health data. It prepares graduates to integrate health, social-behavioral and informatics knowledge to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

Our program prepares graduates for entry- and mid-level positions in hospitals or clinics, electronic health record companies, public health organizations and other organizations.

Our graduates also have skills required to enter the growing field of health information exchange, which includes regional health information organizations and the emerging specialization in personal health records.

Interprofessional Advantage

Students in our program come from varied backgrounds and contribute a wide range of experiences. Although previous health care experience is preferred, it is not required. Just as students bring a breadth of experiences to the program so, too, do our faculty.

Designed and delivered by faculty from across the disciplines of informatics, nursing, health policy and management, public health and project management, the curriculum in our certificate program offers an interprofessional advantage. Students acquire diverse skills in health informatics, as well as impact evaluation, project management and organizational change.

From Certificate to Master's Degree

After earning your health informatics certificate, you can choose to enter KU's master's degree in health informatics program. All certificate courses will count toward the master's degree requirements.

Program Format

Theis graduate-level certificate is comprised of 17 total credit hours. To learn more about coursework, please visit the curriculum page. All courses can be completed online, except for practicum, which is completed at a location near the student.
