Health informatics is an interdisciplinary profession. Students in our programs come from varied backgrounds and contribute a wide range of experiences. Although previous health care experience is preferred, it is not required. Just as students bring a breadth of experiences to the program so, too, do our faculty.
The master's degree in health informatics prepares graduates for entry- and mid-level positions in hospitals, electronic health record companies, public health organizations and organizations specializing in knowledge management. The graduate certificate is composed of 16 credit hours of foundational informatic courses and the master's degree is an additional 15 credit hours beyond the certificate curriculum (requiring a minimum of 31 credit hours total to receive both the certificate and degree).
A benefit of the dual degree programs is the length of time in school can be shorter than if each degree were completed separately. However, these programs are rigorous and only for outstanding applicants with the dedication and commitment necessary to complete them successfully.
KU’s health informatics program offerings include a master's degree in health informatics, a graduate certificate in health informatics, an accelerated dual-degree master's program with the bachelor's degree in health information management, and a dual degree master's program with KU's doctorate in pharmacy.
