Are you ready to apply online to KU’s health information management bachelor’s degree in the School of Medicine? Follow these steps.
The application deadline is February 1 for priority status. Decisions for completed applications are made during the spring semester. We may accept applications after the February 1 deadline until all seats in the program are filled for the next fall class.
Before Submitting Your Application
Review the following information about our program and gather the necessary documents before you start the online application.
- Review the eligibility and admission requirements, including information for international students, and ensure that all prerequisite course work will be completed by the fall semester start of the program.
- Review the technical standards and computer and software requirements.
- Gather the following information that you will need to upload with your application:
Letter of Intent
Write a 1-2 page letter, double-spaced, using a common font (e.g. Arial, Times New Roman), and save it as a Word, PDF, or rich-text format document to upload with the application.
The letter should address the following:
- Describe how you learned about the profession of health information management, and why you decided it would be your chosen pathway.
- Discuss opportunities and challenges you see on the horizon for HIM professionals.
- Consider your career goals and how you see that a bachelor's degree will support your goals.
Resume
You will need to upload a resume with the application. Have this file saved and ready before beginning. Indicate your education and work background, honors, memberships in organizations, service to the community outside of school-related activities and any other information that you might deem important for the committee to consider.
References
You will be asked to enter the names and contact information (including email addresses) of two individuals who will answer questions to provide a recommendation based on your performance in academic or professional settings. One reference should be from an instructor/professor. A second should be from a manager or supervisor of a work/volunteer organization. The recommendations may not be obtained from family members, friends, etc. Please make sure each reference is willing to submit answers to the questionnaire online. They will receive a link via email, requesting that they submit a reference for you online.
Transcripts
Arrange to have one official copy of each transcript from every college and university you have attended sent directly to KU Medical Center. If the institution provides electronic transcripts, please have them sent to kumcadmissions@kumc.edu. Paper transcripts can be mailed to the following address: Attn: Health Info Mgmt Admissions, Mailstop 4005, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160
Current or former KU students do not need to request official transcripts for courses taken from KU.
After Submitting Your Application
Our department makes admission decisions for completed applications during the spring semester. Late applications will be reviewed after the spring semester. Once all applications materials are received, selected applicants may be called to schedule an interview with faculty of the department.
Upon acceptance into the program, you will be sent an enrollment packet consisting of background check instructions and information about computer requirements. You must complete the background check before entering the program.

Please submit your completed application and pay the application fee. The application fee is paid when you click SUBMIT from the online application. Applicants can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or by electronic check. U.S. banks only. Application fees are non-refundable. Electronic checks will be held for approximately six business days while the check clears.
