About Our Bachelor's Degree Program

Health information management is vital to administrative operations as well as quality and safety in patient care in health care.

After completing two years of prerequisite coursework, you enter into our two-year program at KU Medical Center, working with cutting-edge technology at a leading academic health center. Our campus in Kansas City, Kansas, includes The University of Kansas Health System – one of the nation’s top-ranked health care providers.

Students entering our program may complete their two years of prerequisites from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, or another qualified, regionally accredited institution.

Our program culminates in graduates sitting for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification examination, an industry-recognized credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association.

Accreditation and Student Outcomes

Logo of CAHIIMThe Health Information Management accreditor of the University of Kansas Medical Center is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College's accreditation for baccalaureate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2029. Student Achievement and Outcomes Data

The following data is from the 2021-2022 academic year.

  • Program graduation rate: 95.2% of students who entered the program graduated.
  • Program employment rate: 100% of graduates who sought employment are employed, with most employed prior to or within six months of graduation. (There are two graduates for which their status is unknown at this time.)
  • Graduate school entry: four of the 20 graduates began graduate studies (in disciplines including MHSA, MSHI and J.D.  programs).
  • Program transfer rate: 0% of students who entered the program transferred to another health information management program.
  • Employer satisfaction: 100% of responding employers strongly agree that they would hire a graduate from the KU health information management program again in the future; 66.7% strongly agree and 33.3% agree that graduates from the KU health information management program have the knowledge necessary to perform work they are hired to perform.

Health information management professionals are not required to possess a national registration or state license for employment. Graduates of KU's bachelor's degree program in health information management are eligible to sit for the registered health information administrator certification exam.
