Do I need a referral?
No, a physician referral is not required.
Where is the clinic?
The clinic is located on the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kansas. See the location, a map and parking directions.
Payment and insurance coverage
Services by the nutrition clinic are not covered by health insurance or Medicare. Payment is accepted by check only. Please make checks payable to "University of Kansas." Sorry, the clinic cannot accept credit cards for payment at this time.
What can I expect at my first visit?
During your initial visit, a registered dietitian will review your health history and discuss your weight loss goals. We can help establish new healthy habits, including appropriate caloric intake, choosing nutrient-dense foods, as well as incorporating daily exercise for a well-rounded approach. Basic measurements will be taken to track your weight loss; however, the Bod Pod is the gold standard for body composition and is encouraged to complement nutrition conseling appointments.
Preparing for your visit and Bod Pod assessment
To keep the testing environment standardized and to provide you with the most accurate results, please follow these guidelines while preparing for your visit:
- No food or drink for 4 hours before testing
- No exercise 6 hours before testing
- Bring your own compression shorts (men) or one-piece swimming suit without padding (women). If you do not have your own, we will provide you with one.
- Be prepared to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, etc., during the testing session; these items can impact the accuracy of volume and mass measurements.
- If you have long hair, please bring a ponytail holder. All participants are asked to wear a swim cap and you may find it helpful to pull back your hair.
How long will a Bod Pod appointment last?
Expect the appointment to take 30 minutes. You will only be inside the Bod Pod for approximately 5 minutes, but extra time allows for collection of information, changing clothes and explanation of results.
Is the Bod Pod loud? Do I need to sit still?
No, the Bod Pod is quiet, though you may hear a series of "popping" sounds due to pressure changes in the machine during the testing session. Some people have noted a feeling similar to that of a moving elevator. Yes, you will be asked to remain still during the testing session. Talking, laughing or moving can cause errors in the measurements.
