How to Apply

Ready to join the KU community? Here are the steps to apply to the Ph.D. in medical nutrition science program.

Application Deadlines and Review Process

Students may enter this program during the fall or spring semester.

  • Fall semester entry: February 1
  • Spring semester entry: September 1

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. program in Medical Nutrition Science are reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, with the approval of the Office of Graduate Studies. Qualified students will be admitted without regard to race, color, national or ethnic origin, gender, age or disability.

Before You Begin Your Application

It will be helpful if you have the following information ready before starting the online application:

  1. Read the nonacademic technical standards. Accepted applicants will be asked if the nonacademic technical standards can be met with or without accommodation.
  2. Personal goals statement: Prepare a statement explaining your personal and professional goals and why you are interested in this academic program.

  3. Resume: Prepare an updated resume.

  4. References: Identify three (3) references. You will be asked to enter the names and contact information (including email addresses) of three (3) individuals. The Slate system will then prompt each person to submit the reference online.

A reference provides a professional recommendation on your behalf. It is preferred that college instructors, academic advisors or supervisors provide these recommendations. The recommendations may not be obtained from family members, friends, etc. Make sure each reference is willing to submit a recommendation electronically.

  5. Transcripts: Arrange to have one official copy of each transcript from every college and university that you have attended sent directly to KU Medical Center. Official transcripts may not be provided directly by the applicant.

If the institution provides electronic transcripts, please have them sent to DNtranscripts@kumc.edu.

    Note
: many institutions offer the National Student Clearinghouse service for the transmission of official transcripts online. Please DO NOT select "University of Kansas" if using this service.

Hardcopy transcripts can be mailed to the following address:
    Attn: Admissions
KU Dept. of Dietetics and Nutrition
    MS 4013 / 3901 Rainbow Blvd
    Kansas City, KS 66160

International Applicants

Carefully review the School of Health Professions information for international applicants and the Office of International Programs information for international students.

If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and arrange for scores to be sent directly to the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition. A satisfactory score on the TOEFL must be obtained within the previous two (2) years (see guidelines for TOEFL). Results must be provided directly to KU by the testing service using ETS school code 6895. Photocopies of scores will not be accepted.

All transcripts and grades earned outside the U.S. must be evaluated, even if classes were taught in English and the transcript is written in English.  Please arrange to have an official copy of your evaluation sent directly to KU Medical Center from World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators. Official evaluations may not be provided directly by the applicant.
