How to Apply

Interested in KU's master's degree program in genetic counseling? Here's what you'll need to apply.

Applications for KU's master's degree program in genetic counseling will open on September 1. The application window closes on December 15 each year. The link to apply will appear at the bottom of this page during this period.

The information presented here should help you prepare for applying online. Note: all material must be received by the December 15 deadline for your application to be considered complete and eligible for consideration.


Application Requirements

  • Official transcripts showing a bachelor's degree conferred and successful completion of all prerequisite coursework with a minimum grade of "C" on each, and an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
  • Three letters of recommendation. 
  • Resume or curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Personal statement describing your understanding of genetic counseling, interest in the field and prior relevant experience.
  • Registration for the National Match System.

National Match System Fee Waiver

AGCPD/GCEA has established a waiver for the $100 fee associated with the Genetic Counseling Admissions Match. Prospective students who demonstrate financial need AND have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater can apply for a match fee waiver.

Prospective students should apply for a fee waiver BEFORE registering for a match code number. Waivers are non-transferable to future match cycles and cannot be transferred by the recipient to another prospective student.


Transcripts

Official Transcripts for Degree

  • You must submit an official transcript from the institution where you completed your undergraduate degree.
  • Official transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution, either by mail in a sealed envelope or electronically through a secure delivery service like Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse.
  • At the time of application, you may attach scanned copies of your transcript(s), but the official transcript(s) must come directly from the issuing institution.
  • Official transcripts should be requested at least two weeks prior to the application deadline to ensure your application is complete by the deadline.

Copies of Transcripts for Non-degree Courses and Transfer Credits

  • For all courses taken at a post-secondary institution, separate from where your undergraduate degree was conferred, it is acceptable to submit unofficial transcripts.
  • All unofficial transcripts should be clear and legible, but they do not need to be sent directly from the issuing institution.

  • E-Transcripts: Official e-transcripts can be sent directly from the institution to the program’s designated email address gcprogram@kumc.edu. Note: If using the U.S. national transcripts clearinghouse or Parchment service, please do NOT select "University of Kansas." Be sure to select "University of Kansas Medical Center."
  • Hardcopy transcripts can be mailed to this address:

Partial or incomplete applications may not be reviewed.

Please submit your completed application and pay the application fee. The application fee is paid when you click SUBMIT from the online application. Applicants can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or by electronic check. U.S. banks only. Application fees are non-refundable. Electronic checks will be held for approximately six business days while the check clears.
