Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? Here are some common questions about KU's bachelor's degree program in clinical laboratory sciences.

What if I already have a bachelor's degree?
All students who are accepted into the clinical laboratory science program at the KU Medical Center must satisfy our degree requirements. Students who already have a degree will receive a second bachelor's degree.

Requirements and process for admission or application to the program
Everything needed for the application can be found in the how to apply section.

Costs of program
Our costs and financial aid page for the bachelor's degree program includes details. Tuition is subject to change every year. Students enroll for 62-69 credit hours during the 2 years at the medical center campus. There are additional campus and laboratory fees students also pay.

How to apply for financial aid
All student loans must be obtained through KU Medical Center and not your current school. This includes students currently attending the KU Lawrence campus. For student loan opportunities, assistance and forms, please visit the Office of the Registrar website.

Program starting and ending dates
The program has one intake of students in the fall semester (August) of each academic year. Students completing one concentration (clinical or molecular) will graduate in May of the second year while those competing both concentrations will graduate the following December.

What is the application deadline?
Applications received by December 15 are reviewed first. Applications continue to be accepted until the class is filled.

Can I do a virtual interview for out-of-state applications?
The admissions committee can provide an interview either via telephone or videoconference to out-of-state applicants.

Part-time employment possibilities
Due to the program's heavy courseload, students should carefully consider their academic schedule before accepting part-time employment. Students in the program are often able to find employment in local hospital, research and reference laboratories.

Health insurance opportunities
All students are required to have health insurance. The student health services office on campus has information about insurance policies for students.

Official uniform requirements
Currently, students are required to wear navy blue, solid-colored scrubs (without printed figures). One set is to be embroidered with the department logo for use during interprofessional education and simulation activities. Additional information is provided upon acceptance into the program.

I am an international student and English is my primary spoken language. Am I required to provide English language proficiency exam scores?
Yes. Please see our requirements for international students on the eligibility page.

Are financial aid and scholarships available?
Yes. Please check the costs and financial aid page for details. In addition, please visit the school's scholarships page.

What on-campus housing options are available for students?
There is no student housing on the KU Medical Center campus. Most students live in apartments in neighborhoods near the campus and are responsible for arranging their own housing. If you are a Kansas resident, your residence must remain in Kansas to qualify for in-state tuition.

Housing is available for students on the Lawrence campus. For more information, please see KU Student Housing.

Is the background check required when applying to the program?
No, not during the application process. Students are required to follow the background check procedure once accepted into the program and complete it before enrolling in classes.

I already have a degree, but it's not from a U.S. college or university. What steps do I need to take?
You must have all non-U.S. transcripts evaluated by WES or ECE and the report sent to the KU Registrar. Please see the information for international applicants page for more details about this procedure.
