Professional Background

Rosann McLean, DHSc, RHIA, CDIP, joined the Department of Health Information Management in 2014 as clinical assistant professor. She was appointed department chair July 1, 2018.

McLean brings diverse experiences in managing personnel, operations, and information systems in areas such as cancer registry, clinical data classification, clinical documentation support, and release of information. Her experience additionally includes program management in continuing medical education and regulatory aspects of clinical research. She has served on institutional committees including health information privacy, health information security, oncology services, and clinical ethics.

She is currently elected as a delegate of the Kansas Health Information Management Association, representing the state of Kansas in the American Health Information Management Association House of Delegates. Her service to the profession also includes previously serving a three-year elected term as a commissioner on the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management. Other positions she has held include service on the American Health Information Management Association's Consumer Engagement Practice Council, Clinical Terminology and Classification Practice Council and its Foundation's Research and Periodicals Workgroup within the Council for Excellence in Education.

Academic Background
McLean earned a bachelor's degree in health information management from the University of Kansas in 2004, a master's in management from Friends University in 2005, followed by a graduate certificate in clinical health care ethics from Saint Louis University in 2009.

She received her doctorate in health sciences with concentration in global health from A.T. Still University, Mesa, Ariz., in 2012.

Research

Overview

McLean has scholarly interests in consumer engagement with health and health care, patient-generated health data, clinical documentation improvement, health care ethics, emerging professional roles in health information management, and health policy.

Among recent scholarly contributions to the profession, McLean previously served as a review panelist for the peer-reviewed journal Perspectives in Health Information Management as well as for for Educational Perspectives in Health Informatics and Information Management.

McLean authored a chapter on the topic of clinical quality management in the 5th and 6th editions of the textbook "Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice" published by the AHIMA Press. She was the lead author of a 2018 ICD-10-CM/PCS textbook and expert reviewer for a textbook on the topic of electronic health records, both published by Paradigm Education Solutions. She has published numerous peer-reviewed and industry articles, and is a local and national speaker.
