The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Center is directed by Rajesh Pahwa, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of Parkinson's disease. The Center offers diagnostic and treatment services for persons with Parkinson’s disease and related conditions including progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, and Lewy body dementia as well as essential tremor and other tremor disorders, hyperkinetic disorders like dystonia, chorea including Huntington's disease and tardive dyskinesia, restless legs, and others.
The Center also offers specialized speech, swallowing, occupational and physical therapy as well as social services. In addition to the use of various medications, surgical interventions for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and other movement disorders are available and include deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus, and thalamus. We also offer botulinum toxin injections for hyperkinetic disorders and drooling.
Educational information about Parkinson’s disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, Lewy body dementia, and essential tremor is also provided. Various educational programs are presented each year and information about regional support groups and other programs and classes are available.
Participation in research studies developed by the Parkinson’s Disease Center is offered. Patients may also participate in clinical research pertaining to investigational medications. The center is recognized as a Center of Excellence in clinical care, research, and outreach by the Parkinson's Foundation (Miami, FL).
