Residency Education
Faculty with the Landon Center on Aging trains both Internal Medicine Residents and Family Medicine Residents in caring for and understanding the aged in a variety of settings. Residents accompany Geriatricians in their primary care geriatrics clinics, their consultative interprofessional assessment clinics, skilled nursing facilities, long term care facilities, and even on home visits. They also participate in didactic teaching over the course of their training to include both large and small group discussions related to key topics in the care of the older adult.
Internal Medicine Residents
The Internal Medicine residents complete a required four-week rotation in Geriatric Medicine that includes visits to skilled nursing facilities, time in the Geriatric Medicine Clinic, Memory Clinic, and other relevant sites. During the rotation, they are each provided with a curriculum notebook to review before weekly small discussion groups. In addition, they complete a pre- and post-rotation exam.
Family Medicine Residents
Since 1995, the KUMC Family Practice Residency has had a required long term care clinical experience. In addition, third-year family practice residents receive a one-month required experience in primary and specialty care of older adults.
This experience includes rotations in Geriatric Interprofessional Assessment Clinic, Wound Care, Neuro-ophthalmology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and skilled care and long-term care facilities. All the residents receive monthly geriatric medicine topics as part of the core curriculum in Family Medicine and a quarterly interprofessional retreat on the care of older adults.
Housecalls
Geriatrics Fellows, Internal Medicine Residents, and Pharmacy students occasionally participate in housecalls for homebound patients. Through these home visits, learners are able to appreciate how to support complicated homebound patients.
