Shared Equipment

The KIDDRC maintains a shared equipment room in 2015 Hemenway with equipment that can be reserved for use by investigators. Badge access to the equipment room is granted following appropriate training by KIDDRC staff. Reservations are scheduled using Bookkit. Some reservations will incur hourly or monthly access charges. Please inquire during training. If you have questions regarding this equipment, please contact Michelle Winter, mwinter2@kumc.edu or Tina Darrow tdarrow@kumc.edu.

OvenBarnstead Incubation Ovens
The KIDDRC maintains 2 Barnstead V incubation ovens. These dry heat ovens operate in a digitally controlled temperature range of ambient to 300 degrees Celsius. The ovens operate as either static set point temperature or programable, varying temperature conditions as set by the user. Of the two ovens maintained by the KIDDRC, one is held at 37 degrees C for biological incubation conditions, the other can be reserved for use and programming by Investigators as needs arise.

Hybridized OvenHybridization Ovens
The shared equipment room houses two Thermo Scientific TM Shake 'n' Stack TM Hybridization Ovens. Each unit has the capability of operating as either a rotating or shaking platform. Temperatures achievable with these units are ambient up to 85 degrees C.

Bead beaterBead beater
The Mini-Beadbeater from BioSpec Products is equipped with a 32 sample holder. The Beadbeater disrupts microbial, tissue, yeast, spores, or fibrous tissue samples using small glass, ceramic, or steel beads. The non-foaming, aerosol-free method preserves enzymes and organelles. In the presence of nucleic acid extraction media such as phenol, Gu-SCN or a commercial kit solution, DNA or RNA is recovered in the highest possible yield. The method is ideal for PAGE, PCR applications, and diagnostics using antibody or oligonucleotide probes. Because the beads and vials are disposable, there is absolutely zero cross-contamination between samples - essential for PCR techniques.

IncubatorShaking Culture Incubators
The core maintains two Innova 44 incubator shakers from New Brunswick Scientific. The shaking incubators can accommodate set points from ambient to 80 degrees C. and volumes from 15mL and 50 mL conicals up to 5 L flasks.

Phospho ImagerBioRad Phospho Imager with K screen eraser
The Bio-Rad Personal Molecular Imager system is a high-resolution laser scanning system for radioisotopic imaging. This system accommodates both large (35 x 43 cm) and small (20 x 25 cm) storage phosphor screens for the imaging and quantitation of 32P, 33P, 35S, 14C, and 3H. Analysis is done using the Quantity One 1-D software package. A K screen eraser is present with the system for general use.

OctetblitzBlitz and Octet Biolayer Interferometry Systems
The Molecular Devices Octet RED96e is a non-fluorescence-based, bench top, protein interaction detection system that uses Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI) technology, and can analyze up to 8 samples in parallel for affinity, kinetics or active protein concentration determination from samples in 96-well microplates. It is a powerful detection platform for kinetic measurements & quantitation using the widest array of label-free binding assays available including readymade, custom coated, and end user coupled probes.

The closest technology to BioLayer Interferometry (BLI) is Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). While these technologies can produce similar data sets, BLI has advantages for certain applications. The principal advantages of BLI are:

  • Its ability to analyze crude samples with a wider range of chemicals present (glycerol, DMSO, etc...)
  • The sample processing is fluidics free, enabling samples to be reused for multiple subsequent assays (it is a not destructive/consumptive process).

The Octet 96e 8-channel instrument provides analytical performance similar to the single- channel Blitz system, but with higher levels of throughput, speed, and flexibility.

Spectra iD5SpectraMax iD5 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader
The SpectraMax iD5 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader measures absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence, TRF and FP.  Read modes include end point, kinetic, spectrum or well scan. The touchscreen allows easy read only data gathering or an attached computer operates a full analysis capable SoftMax Pro Software.

spectramaxMolecular Devices Plate Reader SpectraMax M5
The SpectraMax® M5 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader is capable of measuring UV and visible absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, fluorescence polarization, and TRF. The Spectramax can accommodate cuvettes or a variety of 6 to 96-well plate formats. The Spectramax performs spectral scanning in 1 nm increments, and up to six wavelengths per read. The plate reader is controlled by industry-leading SoftMax® Pro Software, which provides flexible data analysis for users.

ChemidocBioRad ChemiDoc MP
The Bio-Rad ChemiDoc MP system is a high-end system for colorimetric, fluorescent and chemiluminescent detection on blots or gels. The chemiluminescent sensitivity is comparable to x-ray film. Fluorescent detection of multiplex blots can be achieved in a single exposure with the output including individual antibody images as well as a merged image. Individual lab accounts on the system allow secure storage of image files. Images can be exported via USB and analysis can be conducted separately using Image J, Image Lab, or other preferred analysis software.

VarianVarian 50Bio
The Varian Cary 50 is a dual beam micro-volume UV/Vis spectrophotometer. It contains a Czerny-Turner monochromator with a Xenon pulse lamp and dual Si diode detectors. It has a 190-1100 nm wavelength range and scans at a maximum 24,000 nm per minute. The system is run via computer with WinUV analysis software.

VacufugeEppendorf Vacufuge
The Eppendorf Vacufuge concentrates samples quickly. The unit operates up to 1400rpm and can be set to 30, 45, or 60 degrees C. The rotor holds up to 48 1.5-2.0mL centrifuge tubes. The on-board pump and vapor trap efficiently maintain vacuum pressure while removing aerosols.

centrifugeEppendorf centrifuge 5804 R
The Eppendorf benchtop centrifuge is equipped with temperature setting for refrigerated centrifugation needs. We have inserts for 15 or 50 mL conicals for the swinging bucket rotor. Maximum speed is 4500 x g. Acceleration and braking can be adjusted as needed to adhere to protocol specifications.

AirfugeBeckman Airfuge Air-driven ultracentrifuge
