How to Apply

If you are interested in applying for KU’s master’s degree in health informatics program, follow the steps below. This is an interprofessional program. Healthcare experience is preferred but not required.

Application Deadlines

We have two application deadlines each year, depending on your desired start date.

  • April 1 for fall semester
  • September 1 for spring semester

Steps to Apply

  1. Before you begin, it’s helpful to gather the following information to make your application process as smooth as possible:
    • $75 nonrefundable application fee.
    • Official transcript(s) of all college-level coursework. Transcripts should be sent directly from your college or university to the University of Kansas School of Nursing.
    • A letter clearly stating your detailed personal objectives and career goals .
    • Contact information for three professional colleagues or faculty who are able to attest to your ability for scholarly activity and leadership roles and have agreed to provide a reference for you. The University will send your references a form to complete via email.
    • Resume/Curriculum Vitae describing your educational and experiential background. Include information about your education, work experience, clinical leadership, community/organizational involvement, scholarship/research and honors/awards,

Admission

Admission decisions for each semester are finalized approximately eight weeks after the application deadline. All applicants are notified of their admission status with mailed letters from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

During the current academic year (Fall 2020 – Spring 2021), 13 applicants were accepted and 9 enrolled in the program.

Enrollment Deposit

To verify admission acceptance and secure enrollment, admitted graduate students must submit a $400 (non-refundable) enrollment deposit. This deposit is applied to the first semester's tuition and is not an additional fee.

New Student Orientation

New master's students are required to attend an orientation program. The half-day orientation program is scheduled during the week prior to the start of semester classes. Additional information regarding orientation is sent to students after receipt of the enrollment deposit.

Computer Competency and Standards

Students entering all programs of study at the University of Kansas Medical Center are expected to have basic skills in using a computer. During your studies in health informatics you will be participating in simulations in Second Life so be sure you have a microphone/headset and a video card that is capable of carrying the graphics in Second Life. You will be expected to have access to Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Visio in order to complete assignments.

Background Check Requirement

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations requires that everyone involved in patient care activities have background checks. This background check will be done at the applicant's expense after provisional acceptance has been granted.
