Understanding Free-Text Notes

These free-text notes include physician and nursing notes, radiology, and pathology reports. Prior to bringing in a note type, the notes are de-identified. There are two steps in our de-identification framework: notes de-identification and notes adjudication. The notes de-identification step removes all identifiable information such as names of patients, locations, identification numbers, dates, and age above 90 in order to meet HIPAA Safe Harbor criteria. During notes adjudication, notes are audited to ensure PHI removal and the note de-identification performance was evaluated before releasing.

We offer Natural Language Processing (NLP) support for information extraction from the free-text clinical notes on a project basis (funding required). Please contact misupport@kumc.edu for inquiry.
