Boxitects by Kim Smith
Age Range: 5-8 years
Summer break is mere weeks away and caregivers will no doubt be scrambling to find activities to do with their young children. On bad weather days, my boys and I used to build cardboard box mazes and houses in our basement. It was a great way to get some wiggles out and create something fun together. Boxitects is about big boxes and bigger dreams and is sure to inspire makers of all ages. The story centers around a young girl who loves to make buildings and things out of cardboard. So much so, that she is enrolled in a special maker school where she meets kids who create masterpieces from all sorts of household items. All is splendid until she meets a rival boxitect. The story culminates in a maker contest consumed by chaos made by the rivals who realize that they must work together to have a shot at winning the competition. Boxitects shows an important lesson to its readers about how rivals can become great allies and teammates. The author, Kim Smith, has a fun-filled activity packet available on her website along with instructions to build a Boxitect Boat. My boys and I highly recommend this colorful, insightful, and inspiring book for all the aspiring makers in your life.
This book was donated to our pediatric patients by a wonderful supporter like you.
