The New Year sometimes suggests new beginnings – maybe changing up some routines, thinking about making a New Year’s Resolution list (or not!). Or maybe just having some wishes about what the New Year might bring for you and your family, the community, the world. As a person who both works with children and families, and is blessed with kids/grandkids, I tend to key in on news that relates to the well-being of children and families – both in our community and the world. Right now, there are many challenges that confront families in this area.
My mom was a social activist (and Reach Out and Read supporter) so we often discussed issues of discrimination, social justice, and world conflict as part of routine conversation. So, she raised an activist, right? Our kids grew up in a household where these issues were discussed as well. They are social activists and have helped us make decisions about how we direct charitable contributions, including to Reach Out and Read KC. Eli’s comment being, if you don’t grow up with a love of books and reading, you are doomed”.
How can we help and educate children, so they are more aware and have a better understanding of what is going on in the world around them? Well, you’d guess correctly if you said read!! This website helps one identify age-appropriate books to teach for change. There is also a tab for books that are NOT recommended, due to mixed, incomplete, or inappropriate messages they might convey to our kiddos. Most will be at your local library!
