Pam K. Shaw, MD FAAP

Professional Background

Dr. Pam Shaw is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Associate Dean for Medical Education.
Her undergraduate degree was in Human Biology at the University of Kansas. She attended medical school and did her pediatric residency at the University of Kansas. After experiencing private practice, Dr. Shaw returned to the University of Kansas in 1990 where she has been involved in the teaching and practice of general pediatrics since then.
Dr. Shaw has been active in education throughout her career. She was chief resident during her pediatric residency.
She was appointed the residency program director and chief of ambulatory services in 1995-2006. In 2006, she was appointed the Phase II or year 3-4 curriculum director and in 2008 she became the medical director for the Neis clinical skills lab. Between 2009-2013, she served as a co-director of the Medicine across the Lifespan module in the Phase I curriculum. She was appointed the Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences in 2014.
She maintained the Assistant Dean position and began as the Associate Vice Chancellor in 2019. She was appointed the Associate Dean for Medical Education in July of 2020.
Dr. Shaw has been involved in advocacy by her involvement in the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has served as president of the Kansas Chapter of the AAP and recently completed 6 years as the District Chair and board member for District VI for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). She is currently serving as the Chair of the Committee on State Government Affairs (COSGA)
She has been involved in training for the Kansas chapter to help private practice physicians offer evidence based and quality care to children including developmental screening, mental health screening, detection and treatment of obesity and oral health services and immunizations.

Research

Overview

Dr. Shaw began her research in clinical trials with vaccines and therapeutics for Cystic Fibrosis patients. She was interested in access to care and spent the bulk of her research in her early faculty care in the use of telemedicine in schools.
Since beginning her educational career, she has been involved in undergraduate medical student education, clinical skills research, interprofessional education research and the advancement of women in medicine.
