Research
Overview
Dr. Mammen’s long term goal is to continue evolving into a national leader in the field of CHF, VAD, and heart transplantation. He is one of only 1,500 out of 30,000 adult cardiologists in the United States board certified in advanced heart failure/heart transplantation. He obtained his advanced clinical training at UT Southwestern Medical Center under the guidance of Clyde Yancy MD (currently Chief of Cardiology at Northwestern University). From 2004 to 2023, Dr. Mammen was a Professor of Internal Medicine and held the Alfred W. Harris, M.D. Professorship in Cardiology, Co-Director of the UT Southwestern Senator Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Specialized Research Center (one of six NIH funded Centers in the country), and the Director for Translational Research for the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Program at UT Southwestern. In February of 2023, he was recruited to the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the U. of Kansas Medical Center as the Division Chief of Advanced Heart Failure Therapeutics and Cardiac Transplantation and the Vice Chair for Translational Research. Currently, Dr. Mammen is a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Maureen and Marvin Dunn Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine at the U. of Kansas School of Medicine. In addition, he retained his position at UT Southwestern. Dr. Mammen’s clinical experience over the past 21 years has enabled him to acquire expertise in the management of all forms of advanced heart failure. He has also developed a unique interest and expertise in caring for neuromuscular patients who develop a cardiomyopathy. In 2010, Dr. Mammen founded the UT Southwestern Neuromuscular Cardiomyopathy Clinic and served as the Medical Director having evaluated 950-1000 patients. At the U. of Kansas, he is now the Founding Medical Director of the KUMC Inherited Cardiomyopathy Clinic, attracting patient referrals from across the country. Referrals to this Clinic have exploded and the growth demonstrates the clinical need for such a clinic in the community. Finally, Dr. Mammen is utilizing this Clinic as a platform for translational studies focused on novel therapies directed towards genetic cardiomyopathies. These studies are aimed at improving the overall care as well as the cardiovascular care we provide to this unique patient population.
