Professional Background
Dr. Paul Camarata is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Arriving to lead the Department in 2010, he was previously the Co-Director of the St. Luke's Brain and Stroke Institute in Kansas City, and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery (Neurosurgery) at the University of Missouri Kansas City, and before that Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Cerebrovascular Laboratory at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He has been clinically active in the treatment of diseases of the brain in the Kansas City area for the past 25 years.
Dr. Camarata's primary clinical focus is in the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, brain tumors and tumors of the skull base.
Dr. Camarata has held a number of leadership roles in organized neurosurgery, including serving 10 years on the Executive Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and serving as Treasurer. He has served as Treasurer of the Neurosurgical Society of America, and is now the President-elect. He has been involved in numerous scientific programs committees and presented work and national and international conferences. Most recently he was elected to serve on the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.
While maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Camarata serves as a reviewer for several journals, as an editor for Neurosurgery OPEN, has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions, and active in clinical research involving stroke and cerebrovascular disease.
