Affirmative Action
University of Kansas Medical Center recognizes that enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of its faculty and staff is critical to enriching an environment that will foster innovation in education, research and healthcare. KU Medical Center is committed to taking goal-oriented steps to increase the number of historically underrepresented persons, as well as individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, and to increase overall diversity, within the KU Medical Center community. Thus, it is the aim of KU Medical Center to identify, recruit and retain a highly qualified, talented, and diverse workforce.
Affirmative Action Laws
Executive Order 11246 prohibits federal contractors from discriminating in employment decisions on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. It also requires federal contractors to take affirmative action in the employment of women and minorities.
Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits federal contractors from discriminating against individuals with disabilities and requires contractors to take affirmative action to hire and promote individuals with disabilities. In 2013, Congress published revised regulations to Section 503 which also require contractors to invite applicants and new hires to self-identify as an individual with a disability. Current employees can update their disability status at any time by following the steps on the Invitation to Self-Identify link to the left.
The Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) prohibits federal contractors from discriminating against an individual based on their veteran status and requires contractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance covered veterans. In 2013, Congress also published revised regulations to VEVRAA which require contractors to invite applicants and new hires to self-identify as a protected veteran. Current employees can update their veteran status by following the steps on the Invitation to Self-Identify link to the left.
Recruitment and Hiring
Hiring administrators and search committee members are encouraged to review the Recruiting Guide and Affirmative Action Best Practices prior to initiating the search process. The Recruiting Guide provides steps for conducting recruitment in accordance with the University's commitment to providing equal opportunities and attracting a diverse workforce. The Affirmative Action Best Practices explains the University's affirmative action obligations and offers best practices for complying with those requirements.
