Professional Background

Michael Jones, DPT, MHS, PT, joined the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training as education associate professor in January 2024. In KU's doctorate program in physical therapy, he directs the advanced topics in human anatomy course and assists with courses in the kinesiology and orthopedic tracks. In addition, he serves as associate director for physical therapy admissions and recruitment.

Prior to coming to KU, Jones spent eight years as a founding core faculty member for South College's doctorate program in physical therapy in Knoxville, Tennessee. This is the first hybrid accelerated program in the nation. He also has extensive experience in full-time clinical practice as a physical therapist, primarily in outpatient settings managing care of patients with orthopedic disorders

Jones earned a bachelor's degree in movement and sport sciences from Purdue University and a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Indiana University. He then studied at the University of Indianapolis, receiving a master's degree in health science in 2011. In 2014, he completed a doctorate in physical therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Jones holds specialty certification in manual therapy and is a board-certified orthopaedic clinical specialist emeritus of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.


Research

Overview

A member of KU's Leveraging Education And Research Now (LEARN) Lab, Jones is active in studying physical therapy education. His current work includes looking at factors of performance in graduate anatomy courses. He also is researching the utility of various instructional modes and tools in anatomical and clinical courses, including virtual reality, cadaveric demonstration and simulation, and anatomical model demonstration and simulation.
