Professional Background
Dr. Basu received his Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences from the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, India. He received his Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in Zoology with specialization in Cytology and Genetics from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India, and Master of Technology (M. Tech.) Degree in Biotechnology from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Dr. Basu finished his Postdoctoral training in the lab of Dr. Eugene Koonin at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Before joining KUMC, Dr. Basu was an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB), and J. Craig Venter Insitute (JCVI), Rockville, MD. At UAB, Dr. Basu was also the director of Genifx genome informatics facility.
Research
Overview
Dr. Basu's research interests involve various aspects of Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics. Currently, he is investigating the role of genome architecture in the evolution of various eukaryotic features, such as the origin of multicellularity and cancer. His other interests include writing software for large-scale genome analysis.
In addition to his research, Dr. Basu is an award-winning teacher. He has been consistently elected as a candidate for the teaching excellence awards many times. He pioneered a new workshop style of teaching at UAB. The courses taught by Dr. Basu are consistently rated in the highest rank by the participants.
