Professional Background

Mustafa Al-Kharsan, MBChB, is a clinical instructor on the clinical track in the Department of Neurology. He completed his medical degree at the University of Al-Mustansiryia College of Medicine in Baghdad, Iraq, followed by his neurology residency at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Al-Kharsan has completed two neurology fellowships: a neurocritical care fellowship at the University of Mexico, and the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at KU Medical Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology
Dr. Al-Kharsan’s clinical interests include neuromuscular medicine, vascular neurology and neurocritical care.

Research

Overview

Dr. Al Kharsan’s research interests encompass multiple methods of gene therapy, including the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) disease and of congenital myopathy. He has given presentations on the role of RNAi in FSHD disease and the CACNAIS congenital myopathy phenotype, and has published peer-reviewed articles on the potential products and treatments for FSHD disease, including an investigation of natural miRNA miR-675 as a prospective RNAi-based gene therapy product for FSHD.
