Professional Background

Laura Henkle Heckert, M.D., is an assistant professor of Psychiatry and Internal Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She also is the associate director of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency Program.

Dr. Heckert joined the faculty in October 2020 after completing her internal medicine/psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she served as chief resident of psychiatry, supervised medical students treating patients at a local safety net clinic and taught first-year medical students in the internal medicine outpatient clinic. She was the recipient of the Shawn M. Storm Memorial Award, presented to the graduating resident who most consistently demonstrated the highest professional qualities in all aspects of patient-centered care.

Dr. Heckert earned her medical degree from Rush Medical College and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa.

An active researcher throughout her training, Dr. Heckert is credited with a number of publications and presentations. Her clinical interests extend to concurrent psychiatric and medical illness as well as mental illness in individuals with epilepsy. She is board certified in internal medicine and psychiatry by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
