Lisa S. Gilmer, M.D.

Professional Background

Dr. Lisa Gilmer is a Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), where she is a member of the Division of General Pediatrics. She is a board-certified pediatrician providing inpatient care to newborns and outpatient care to infants, children and adolescents. She also the Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences in the Office of Medical Education and a member of the Office of Continuous Quality Improvement at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Dr. Gilmer received her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1996 where she also completed her residency and chief residency in Pediatrics. From 2005-2020, Dr. Gilmer served as the Pediatric Residency Program Director and a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee. She continues to be involved in GME as a member of the Accreditation Subcommittee and a presenter for and an original member of the Residents as Teachers Subcommittee. In addition, she served as an Assistant Dean of Student Affairs in her role as the first Delp Society Director in the ACE curriculum, a role she held from 2017-2020.

Her teaching interests include career and specialty advising for medical students, mentorship of junior faculty, trainee wellness, competency-based medical education, feedback, UME and GME accreditation, and residents as teachers.

Dr. Gilmer has served as the president-elect, president and immediate past president of the Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 2016-2022. Her professional interests include: caring for multiples as a mother of twins herself, pediatric advocacy, water safety as a former lifeguard as well as child passenger safety as a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Dr. Gilmer's passion for teaching, commitment to outstanding care of pediatric patients and their families, and desire to be a lifelong learner herself are the foundation of a 20+ career as a medical educator. The legacy she hopes to leave is that her contributions to the professional and personal development of each medical student and resident whose path she has crossed will contribute to their unique ripple as a physician.
