Kelley Nelson-Strouts, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, joined the faculty in the KU Department of Hearing and Speech in July 2023 as clinical assistant professor. She currently teaches courses SPLH 860 Evaluation of Speech and Language and SPLH 844 School-Aged Language Disorders, in addition to providing clinical supervision of master’s-level speech language pathology students in the program.
Before arriving at KU, Nelson-Strouts gained significant experience as a speech language pathologist, including serving in positions at Children’s Therapy Services in Overland Park, Kansas, and with the Olathe and Turner local public school districts.
Nelson-Strouts received a bachelor's degree in human nutrition from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, in 2012 and a master's degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Kansas in 2016. In May 2024, she earned her doctorate in speech-language pathology, also from the University of Kansas.
Research
Overview
Research by Nelson-Strouts is focused on morphological awareness, as related to its role in word reading and reading comprehension. She is also studying implementation science, with a particular focus on the use of evidence-based reading and language assessment practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Nelson-Strouts has served in the Reading, Language, and Learning Lab at the University of Kansas Medical Center, working on projects relating to monolingual and bilingual reading comprehension funded by the National Institutes of Health.
