Professional Background

Kimberly Cornwell, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She received her BSN from William Jewell College, her MS in Nursing from the University of Kansas and her DNP from Fort Hays State University. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

She was previously an Assistant Professor in Nursing at William Jewell College where she taught courses in Women's Health and Obstetrics, Leadership, Basic Assessment, and Community Health as well as general education courses through the College. She continued to work PRN in both Labor and Delivery and in her role as a Family Nurse Practitioner in a clinic providing care for low-income and uninsured families. She returned to full-time practice after 8 years in an academic setting.

She began working in Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology in 2013 and continued until she accepted her appointment to the University of Kansas School of Nursing in 2019. She has taught in both the traditional BSN and DNP programs at KUSON with courses taught focusing on Professional Development and Leadership. She enjoys working with students in the clinical setting in Obstetrics and Capstone and she created and currently teaches an OB lab/simulation that all senior nursing students rotate through.

Her current research activities include exploring Professional Identity Development in Undergraduate Nursing Students and Improving Coping in Undergraduate Nursing Students.
