A personal statement from Dr. Ryan:

I have a firm foundation in my core values both in my personal and professional lives. It is on this foundation of core values that my practice as a physician is based upon.

Patient care, education, and wellbeing are things I am very passionate about. I believe in patient centered care that revolves around being able to display empathy to our patients to establish rapport and relationships based on mutual respect, to provide evidence based, up to date medical care. More than that, I do my best to encourage patients to be active in, and advocate for their own health care decision making. This is accomplished by educating them on the risks and benefits of proposed treatments and providing information to them in a way that is understandable. Lastly, by encouraging them to make decisions based on this information that is in line with their own beliefs and values.

For learners, I try to provide a safe learning environment so that both students and residents can grow personally and professionally. I ask questions of learners to assess their knowledge base so that I can do my best to bridge the gaps. And encouraging learners of all levels to seek answers to their own questions, fostering independence, competence, and ownership of their education, as well as encouraging these same values in developing care plans for our patients.

Wellbeing is another area that I am passionate about, because if we do not care for ourselves, and our own basic needs, how then can we provide care to those who are in our care in the hospital? Maintaining our wellbeing is foundational in maintaining personal-work life balance and in preventing burnout.
