Professional Background

Dr. Joel J. Hake is a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He currently serves as the Clinical Medical Director of the Family Medicine Clinic at KUMC and formerly held the position of Associate Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency. Since completing his residency at KUMC in 2014, Dr. Hake has delivered full-spectrum family medicine, including acute and chronic disease management, preventive care, and procedural medicine, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. His clinical interests include primary care innovation, minor procedures, dermatologic care, and quality improvement in healthcare delivery.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Hake is a passionate and experienced medical educator. He has led the development and implementation of an 18-month systems-based didactic curriculum for Family Medicine residents. He teaches core topics in family medicine, procedural skills such as suturing and biopsies, and facilitates simulation labs and hands-on workshops. Dr. Hake also serves as a preceptor and lecturer in the School of Medicine, actively engaging medical students in both classroom and clinical environments.
