Alan M. Poisner, MD'60
In 2023, Alan Poisner was selected as USATF National Masters Racewalker of the Year in the 85-89 age division, the 5th time that he has won this award in a number of different age divisions. He won gold medals in the national Indoor and Outdoor USATF Masters championships (1500-meters and 5000-meter walks. He also won two gold medals in the biannual National Senior Games in Pittsburgh, while setting a new national record in the 1500-meter walk. Alan was also featured in a full article in the Harvard Men's Health Watch magazine.

F. Blaine Hollinger, MD'62
Dr. Holllinger retired on February 1, 2024 after 55 years at Baylor College of Medicine.

Alan D. Forker, MD'64
Dr. Forker writes to us: "Wife, Anne, and I married 4 years. Sadly Susie died in 2019 with Alzheimer’s. Anne’s husband, Dave Lewis, died from cancer. Great to have a 2nd chance at love.”

Dr. Silverberg writes to us: "My wife and I traveled to southern France in October 2023 on a river cruise. We will return to France in September 2024 to do a different river cruise. We will be married 5 years on September 1, 2024.”

Dr. Richert-Boe writes to us: "I am a mostly retired medical oncologist, but I still work a few months per year. I spend most of my time on my farm here in Oregon, with my horses, and playing polo. The rest of the time, I play with my grandkids.”

Dr. Stapleton is the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Medical Alumni Award. Jack and the other Alumni Awardees will be honored at a recognition ceremony on September 27, 2024, during KU Medical Center's annual Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Dr. Huet writes to us: "I am now retired and have had a very fulfilling professional career as a psychiatrist. I have worked at Labette Center for Mental Health Services in Parsons, KS, Wyandotte Center for Community Behavioral Healthcare in Kansas City, KS, and at the Leavenworth VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS. I am extremely grateful for the educational opportunity afforded to me at the KU SOM and have many fond memories of my days as a student.”

Jack Westfall, MD'91 & Audrey Yee, MD'91
Drs. Westfall and Yee write to us: "After three years in Washington, D.C. working at the NIH (Audrey) and doing health policy (Jack), we moved back to Colorado. Audrey is Section Chief Home Health for the VA and Jack is working part-time family medicine in his hometown of Yuma, Colorado and doing practice-based research with the DARTNet Institute and several other academic institutions."

Douglas C. Burton, MD'96
Dr. Burton has been recognized with the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors a member for distinguished service to the SRS, as well as significant contributions to spinal deformity care.

Gillian S. Stephens, MD'99
Dr. Stephens write to us: "Retired Medical Director from Saint Louis University Department of Family and Community Medicine. Twentyfour-year survivor of pulmonary arterial hypertension- receiving Flolan and then Veletri through a central line 24/7. Initial life expectancy was three years."

Marc E. Enyart, MD'02
Dr. Enyart rejoined the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Kansas Health System in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care after 14 years in other facilities. He's happy to be back and working with a lot of his former colleagues.

Dr. Totten was named the new Chief Medical Officer for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). “Dr. Totten is a life-long Kansan and currently provides health care services to western Kansas,” said Secretary Janet Stanek. “His invaluable experience promises to bring an added lens to our work at KDHE, strengthening our commitment to our mission of protecting and improving the health and environment of all Kansans. We are delighted to be able to work with Dr. Totten so that he can continue his work in Colby and work with the team at KDHE as well.”

Dr. Mills is the recipient of the 2024 Early Career Achievement in Medicine Alumni Award. Justin and the other Alumni Awardees will be honored at a recognition ceremony on September 27, 2024, during KU Medical Center's annual Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Dr. Schroeppel was named chair and clinical service chief for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the KU School of Medicine, effective January 1, 2024. He assumes this role after serving as interim chair and clinical service chief since January 2023.

Dereck Totten, MD'13, MPH'15
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has named Dr. Dereck Totten as the new Chief Medical Officer. “Dr. Totten is a life-long Kansan and currently provides health care services to western Kansas,” said Secretary Janet Stanek. “His invaluable experience promises to bring an added lens to our work at KDHE, strengthening our commitment to our mission of protecting and improving the health and environment of all Kansans. We are delighted to be able to work with Dr. Totten so that he can continue his work in Colby and work with the team at KDHE as well.”

Emily Haas, MHSA'19
Emily Haas is now the Director of Programs with BioNexus KC and Director of Digital Health Kansas City. Emily is a Kansas City native excited to drive healthcare innovation in the Midwest. She brings her unique background in education and healthcare to envision and advance the life-sciences and digital health ecosystem in KC. Most recently, Emily worked at Saint Luke’s Health System in Kansas City developing programs and executing strategic initiatives for the cardiovascular service line.

Dr. Hughes is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award. This award recognizes and rewards demonstrated teaching ability of a clearly superlative nature. The award was presented at an inaugural University Teaching Awards ceremony in the Kansas Union on the Lawrence campus on November 7, 2023.
