Expanding Access for Rural Providers
Decades of physician recruitment through KU Medical Center’s Rural Health Education and Services have strengthened access to care and boosted local economies.
Access to continuing education can be a challenge for health professionals serving rural communities. New partnerships among KU Medical Center offices and campuses are forming to help bridge that gap. The KU Area Health Education Center, the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development and Kansas Center for Rural Health partnered to create a scholarship and application process designed specifically for rural providers.
The original idea was simple. Develop continuing education scholarship opportunities for providers practicing in rural areas who are not physicians. The goal was to reduce financial barriers and make high-quality education more accessible for the professionals who often carry the greatest responsibility in rural health systems.
The Kansas Center for Rural Health secured grant funding to support a pilot program. The first opportunity supported through this funding is the Rural Maternal Health Symposium, which will bring together clinicians and health leaders for a day-long event in Salina in May. Organized by the Kansas Center for Rural Health, the symposium aims to share strategies, clinical updates and collaborative approaches to improving maternal and infant care in rural communities. Now in its third year, this is the first time that a scholarship opportunity will be offered.
Supporting rural clinicians in accessing high-quality education is just one important way we are helping ensure that Kansas communities continue to receive compassionate, well-informed care where it matters most.
