Learning Management System

At KUMC, online courses are developed and delivered using Blackboard, a comprehensive suite of online teaching and learning tools. TLT assistance is available for all aspects of your online course: advising, designing, developing, training, teaching, and supporting.

  • Fully-online courses provide both you and your students with a convenient and effective learning environment, anytime and anywhere.
  • Hybrid courses, where some class time is face-to-face and other time is spent learning online, allow you to select the most effective delivery method for the various activities in your course.
  • Web-enhanced courses meet face-to-face but include a Blackboard course site to enhance course content and activities, such as online access to PowerPoints, an online gradebook, or between-class discussions.

Web Conferencing

KUMC has two solutions for web conferencing: Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and Adobe Connect. Both provide excellent ways to communicate with your participants, but they serve two different purposes. Collaborate Ultra is geared more towards education and student engagement, while Adobe Connect is used for meetings where sensitive or private information will be shared.

Lecture Capture and Video Content Management

Video content creation and online sharing of this content have become a large part of the learning experience; therefore, we utilize Panopto to ensure instructors and students have the best possible experience. Panopto allows users to create recordings with multiple channels of video and share them within an interactive, web-based viewer. Panopto can also be used to manage and edit these recordings online. This service also allows for the live-streaming of events.

Our Health Education Building (HEB) offers two recording studios, with controlled environments, that give users the ability to create high-quality recordings. These studios contain high-quality microphones, specialized lighting, multiple computer monitors, and a Lightboard, which allows for drawing on the screen while recording. Users in some HEB classrooms also have access to Panopto recording appliances. These allow for the entire classroom visual, room audio, and on-screen content to be recorded.

Instructors can schedule these recordings with TLT ahead of time, and even schedule recurring recordings for their weekly classes. Scheduling ahead of time allows instructors to focus on the teaching instead of worrying about the technology.

Student Engagement Technology

The concept of student engagement technology is predicated on the belief that learning improves when students are inquisitive, interested, or inspired, and that learning tends to suffer when students are bored, dispassionate, disaffected, or otherwise disengaged, As instructors, we desire to increase student engagement through our interactions with students.

In his often-cited work, Moore(1) , identifies and describes the three types of interaction that should occur in an effective course: learner-content, learner-instructor, and learner-learner. However, learner-content interaction is often the primary focus in many online courses, and Moore asserts that all three interaction types should be included in an effective online course.

Instructional Design

Teaching & Learning Technology (TLT) offers instructional design and course consult services for online, blended, and face-to-face courses. These services include design, development, revision, and technology integration to foster engaging, interactive, and effective learning.

The instructional designers provide guidance and recommendations based on industry best practices, Blackboard's Exemplary Rubric, and Quality Matters' Accessibility and Usability resources to help support faculty in the development of courses, learning modules, and instructional materials.

The following are a few elements of course design our instructional designers assist with:

  • Design or redesign a course for teaching either online, blended, or face-to-face
  • Consult with faculty on course design and structure
  • Ensure your course meets your students needs through Universal Design and Accessibility
  • Integrate appropriate technology-based formative/summative assessments
  • Integrate collaborative learning activities and assignments
  • Implement and train faculty on appropriate educational technologies
  • Recommend teaching/learning strategies for different types of delivery to create significant and effective teaching and learning experiences
  • Offer real-time support for class activities pre, during, and post.
  • Integrate and support use of multimedia tools such as Panopto, Blackboard Collaborate, or YouTube instructional videos
  • Assist with strategies to increase student interaction, social, and instructor presence
  • Provide training and instruction on the use of learning management system tools
  • Promote implementation of course templates within programs as deemed appropriate

Innovation and Emerging Technologies

The intersection of education and technology created the need for the Teaching & Learning Technologies department. As both education and technology are ever-changing, this intersection must also change and adapt. Emerging technology in education promises to revolutionize the way students and teachers work and interact. At times, they also aim to eliminate some elements of traditional education altogether, including the need for physical proximity to the classroom, costly textbooks, or even the presence of a human teacher. These educational technologies try to make leaning more efficient, engaging, relevant, and entertaining.

One of TLT's strategic goals is to stay abreast of emerging educational technologies. A joint study(2) by Eduventures and Quality Matters identifies the most compelling technologies for institutions of higher learning as the following:

  • Adaptive Learning allows the students to follow unique learning paths based on their interests and experiences.
  • Learning Analytics allows teachers and administrators to track student behavior and make targeted imporvements to courses.
  • Simulations, Game-Based Learning Activities and Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality promise to capture students' imaginations.
  • Competency-Based Education offers a new way of measuring outcomes based not on hours behind a desk or in front of ascreen, but rather on a student's objective demonstration of competency in given areas.
  • Open Educational Resources pledge to make learning more affordable, accessible, and flexible by replacing textbooks with materials that are free to acccess for anyone with an internet connection.

While TLT researches all of these technologies, TLT has acquired funding to explore selected technologies in greater depth. These include 3D printing, Lightboard lecture-enhancement tool, and VR/AR/XR technologies. For more information on any of our emerging technologies contact:

3D Printing Services

With the fall in costs for consumer 3D printers and the rise in availability of 3D digital models, 3D printing in education has exploded in recent years. TLT has acquired its own 3D printer to offer a pilot printing service to faculty and students. If you have a digital model or are in need of a medical model for educational purposes, feel free to contact the TLT EdTech department to learn more about our 3D printing service.

Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality Technologies

Simulation offers scheduled, safe, and valuable learning experiences that are difficult to obtain in real life. Learners acquire hands-on experience and thinking skills, including knowledge-in-action, procedures, decision-making, and effective communication. Currently, KUMC's state-of-the-art ZIEL (Zamierowski Institute for Experiential Learning) Simulation labs offers advanced healthcare education for its students. These simulations are resource intensive.

TLT is researching how VR technologies can supplement these simulations offering additional benefits of cost-effective, time-saving, and repetitive learning opportunities to meet the education outcomes of our programs. In addition, VR/AR/XR can extend to mobile devices and other consumer products obtainable by students so that learning experiences can done at home at the students' convenience. Much as the PC has expanded education over large computer mainframes, VR/AR/XR devices can expand the opportunities for simulation. Pre-recorded video lectures are growing in popularity with an exponential increase in usage at KUMC. With the introduction of the Panopto video recording platform, the number of recordings is increasing each semester. While many of these recordings are capturing live in-class lessons, a growing number of them are pre-recorded for presentation to students later. The so-called "Flipped Classroom" encourages faculty to create instructional content in advance of class time, so that students come prepared with basic information that can be discussed or practiced during class sessions.

To support these pre-recorded lectures, the self-service recording studio (B209) in the HEB includes a Lightboard by Learning Glass. A Lightboard gives instructors a transparent writing surface so that they can sketch, draw, and write notes while maintaining eye contact with the learners watching online, either live or recorded. The image is flipped within the computer, so the instructor does not have to write backwards.
