Eligibility

All degree-seeking students at the University of Kansas Medical Center including School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Professions and Graduate Studies.

Requirements

Each student must participate in a combination of the following experiences and activities. Each item is worth a determined number of points. Students need a total of 25 points to receive the GSDP certificate.

The credentials of this program will be visible on the recipient's transcript.

Students can select from a variety of experiences and any combination. The following list provides several examples of opportunities that qualify for points; this is not an exhaustive list.

Advisor Meeting
As soon as you are interested in the GSDP, the first step is to schedule an initial meeting with the program directors Dr. Maria Alonso Luaces at malonsoluaces@kumc.edu and Kimberly Connelly at kconnelly@kumc.edu.

Core requirements:
  • Academics (6 points total to be earned)

There are various courses offered at KU Medical Center that enhance knowledge of health equity. Students are encouraged to explore appropriate courses within their own programs. For PhD students studying and conducting research, a commitment to inclusive research should be demonstrated. (Each course with a cultural or diversity component can be awarded 2 points.) CFHI Pillars of Global Health is the only required course for everyone. Completion earns a learner 2 points toward the academic requirement. Please reach out to kconnelly@kumc.edu  for CFHI Pillars of Global Health enrollment instructions.

  • Away Experiences (6 points total to be earned)
There are many rich off-campus learning experiences in communities both near and far available for our students for extended periods of time ranging from one week to two months. These “away experiences” add depth to our students’ learning in the classroom.
(Away Experience points can be earned in the following increments: 40 hours away = ½  point; 80 hours = 1  point; 120 hours = 1 1/2 points; 160 hours = 2 points. Points can also be awarded for the preparation time required for an international educational experience based on the recommendation from OIP. For example, a one-week IEE preparation is ½ point and preparation for a 2 to 8-week experience is 2 points)

  • Activities (6 points total to be earned)
KU Medical Center offers a vast array of student organizations and events for students to attend, join and/or participate in. (Each activity can be awarded ½ to 2 points depending on the time commitment and the student’s level of involvement and leadership)

  • Service (6 points total to be earned)
There are a multitude of community service activities offered by KUMC as well as via organizations outside of the university which give students an opportunity to interact with diverse populations, to participate in community health education or community participatory research. Students should follow their personal passion. (Service can earn 1 point per 10 hrs of service)

  • E-portfolio and Reflection Paper (1 point total to be earned)
Students are required to synthesize and reflect on their experiences by submitting an e-portfolio documenting all activity as well as a final paper.
