Professor Emeritus, Population Health

Professional Background

Dr. Glendon G. Cox, a native Kansan, has served in many roles in healthcare and academic medicine. He attended the University of Kansas, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in chemistry in 1977. In 1980, he graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

He completed training in Diagnostic Radiology in 1984 and joined the faculty of the school as an Assistant Professor. Based largely on his publications related to the application of computers and networks in diagnostic imaging, Dr. Cox was promoted to Associate Professor in 1987. In 1990, he left the University to form a new practice group in Overland Park. In 1993, he returned to the University as Professor of Radiology and Director of Thoracic Radiology and Imaging. In 1994, he was named to the Board of Directors of Kansas University Physicians, Incorporated, serving on that organization’s Executive Committee as Treasurer from 1997 to 2002.

Shortly after his return, Dr. Cox was drawn into academic administration as Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education, a position responsible for oversight of all residency programs. In 2000, he assumed the role of Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, responsible for the oversight of all educational programs sponsored by the medical school—undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate.

The exposure to business, law, leadership and management gained through his experiences in private practice and through his administrative activities stimulated an interest in formal training in the fields of health policy, healthcare management and business. Between 2000 and 2005, he completed his work for both MBA and MHSA degrees while maintaining a full schedule as Professor of Radiology and Vice Dean. Upon graduation he was selected to Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honor society, and received the “Health Care Executive of the Future” Award from the Department of Health Policy Management.

Having decided to step down as Vice Dean in 2008, Dr. Cox was selected to become the Director of the Institute and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management. In 2012, he was called upon to return to the role of Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education as the school prepared for a pending LCME visit while onboarding a new Executive Dean. In 2015, he stepped out of the Dean’s Office to return to teaching in the MHSA and PhD (Health Services Research) while practicing and teaching in the Department of Radiology. In his most recent administrative role in 2019, he served as Interim Chair of Health Policy and Management to facilitate the merger of that department with the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health to form an integrated Department of Population Health.
