Professional Background

Elizabeth C. Penick, Ph.D., ABPP, AACP, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Director of the Division of Psychology.

Dr. Penick received her Master's degree in experimental psychology from Tulane University in New Orleans and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. She also lived abroad for two years where she engaged in graduate work at the University of London. She received her Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Academy of Clinical Psychology (AACP). She is widely published and the recipient of, or participant in, many nationally funded research grants. She is currently the PI on a longitudinal study of Danish men at high risk for alcoholism. She is the co-author of the "Psychiatric Diagnostic Interview."

She was the recipient of the annual Outstanding Teaching Award presented by the Kansas Psychological Association and the Jayhawk Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award by the University of Kansas Medical Center.

She divides her time between clinical work as a licensed clinical psychologist, teaching, and research. Her research interests have focused on the antecedents and consequences of alcoholism. She coined the term "Diagnosis Specific Psychotherapy" in a chapter dedicated to systematically integrating psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.
