BEP Overview

BACs, BEPs, and BELs...OH MY!

You may have heard some of these acronyms thrown around lately, but what do they mean? 

Building Emergency Plans, or BEPs, are required by International Fire Code and are really a best management practice. BEPs will list instructions on each specific building's evacuation and emergency processes, critical systems within the building you work or study in, and where to meet and take accountability should an evacuation event occur. The plans will be consistent through each University building on the KUMC and KU Lawrence campuses, so whether you have classes here or in Lawrence, you can always be informed on the emergency processes for the building you occupy!

The BEPs are built and updated annually by the Building Advisory Committees, or BACs. BACs are staffed with one department designee from each department that occupy's the building; for example, if the building you work in houses 10 different departments, then your BAC should have 10 members. This will give each department an opportunity to voice their concerns when it comes to building emergency planning. Each member's input on the BEP is invaluable!

Nominated from your building's BAC will be a Primary Building Emergency Leader (BEL), a Secondary Building Emergency Leader (SBEL), and a Tertiary Building Emergency Leader (TBEL). These three people will be the point personnel for correspondence with first responders and the University Emergency Management Team. This will help with overall communication of University emergency management information. The BEL, SBEL, and TBEL will receive information, which they will distribute to the BAC. Those BAC members will take that information back to their individual departments for dissemination. It works the same way in an evacuation event (real and annual drills): the BAC members will take accountability of their individual departments ensuring everyone made a safe escape, they will report their full accountability to the BEL, SBEL, or TBEL as necessary, who will then report to the first responders! This flow of communication will ensure all of campus, as well as first responders, are informed and aware!

Along with this program, you may see disaster bags placed in your area. These bags can be modified by the BACs as necessary but can include items such as, first aid kits, flashlights, safety vests, whistles, accountability check sheets, and more! Make them your own, stock them with items that you feel would benefit you most in an emergent event!
