Elaine M. Fan, MD, MS, is a board-certified Pediatric Hematology-Oncology physician at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita and Wesley Children’s Hospital. She is committed to delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to children with blood disorders and cancer, with particular clinical interests in hematologic malignancies and blastoma-type solid tumors.

Dr. Fan’s passion for pediatric oncology was sparked during her undergraduate years while shadowing Dr. McKinnell, a pediatric oncologist whose exemplary care left a lasting impact and inspired her to pursue this specialty.

She is triple board-certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and in Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventive Medicine—highlighting her commitment to both clinical excellence and innovation in healthcare.

Research

Overview

Dr. Fan is passionate about leveraging clinical informatics to bridge the gap between medicine and technology—enhancing both provider and patient experiences and ultimately improving health outcomes in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology. She enjoys optimizing clinical workflow efficiency and developing decision support tools within electronic health records to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce medical errors. To deepen her expertise in this field, Dr. Fan earned a Master of Biomedical Informatics during her fellowship at the University of Utah.

Her interests also extend beyond clinical care and informatics. Motivated by a strong commitment to system improvement and healthcare leadership, she is currently pursuing a Physician MBA at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Through this training, Dr. Fan aspires to be a change agent in advancing healthcare delivery and operational excellence.

In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Fan serves as a Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Section Editor for HemOnc.org and as a Clinical Consultant for the Oncology Research and Evaluation (ClinCORE) Program within the Surveillance Research Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
