Addressing Implicit Bias and Inequity

Implicit bias is the phenomenon of hidden bias that emerges from individual lived experiences that affect our understanding, actions, and decision-making in an unconscious manner.

At KU Medical Center, we define diversity as a state of being in which the variety of cultures, experiences, expertise and viewpoints are valued and incorporated into the fabric of our community. Diversity encompasses age, education level, ethnicity and race, gender expression and identity, nationality, national origin, physical and mental ability, political and religious perspectives, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and other human differences.

About our training

KU Medical Center offers Unconscious/Implicit Bias training as one strategy to advance our goals of building a diverse and inclusive institution. We hope this training will spur meaningful, safe, brave and necessary conversations that create the type of campus culture that cultivates an environment of inclusivity and belonging where everyone feels valued. This training contributes to KU Medical Center’s mission of improving lives and communities in Kansas and beyond through innovation in education, research and health care.

Implicit bias is the phenomenon of hidden bias that emerges from individual lived experiences that affect our understanding, actions and decision-making in an unconscious manner. Implicit bias can impact the workplace, educational institutions and the health care setting through organizational culture, individual decision-making and policies such as admissions decisions, performance management and quality care. Learning about implicit bias and how to mitigate bias can help us make more purposeful decisions for the university.

A group of 20 individuals from across our campuses, with diverse roles, perspectives and personal experiences, lead our Implicit Bias trainings on a rolling basis. Continuing education (CE) credits may be offered for Implicit Bias Training; attendance requirements are enforced according to KU Medical Center Continuing Education & Professional Development standards.

Request Training for Your Team

Training for your department or team also is available by request. The training is 2-hours, in-person. Members of the KU Medical Center community can visit myKUMC and fill out the request form (log-in required)
