James D. Garnett, MD

Professional Background

James David Garnett, MD, FACS is an associate professor in the department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and is the Director of the Voice and Swallowing Center within the department. He underwent his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and completed his residency in Otolaryngology at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He then underwent fellowship training in Laryngology and Professional Voice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville Tennessee.

After two years in private practice in West Palm Beach, Florida, he was recruited back to West Virginia University to establish a Voice and Swallowing Center. The WVU Center was very active in both cancer management and was a pioneer in the use of Transnasal Esophagoscopy after Wake Forest University. After 5 years there, he was then recruited to the University of Kanas Medical Center to replicate the success of the Center in West Virginia.

The University of Kansas Center has grown from one laryngologist and one specialty trained speech pathologist to two laryngologists and four speech pathologist under his direction. In addition,
Dr. Garnett is an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Music for their Vocal Pedagogy program (see website below:(http://cmed.faculty.ku.edu/chovoped/chopeddoc.html),
where he lectures as well as helps clinically train singing instructors who will help rehabilitate singers with vocal injury or otherwise trying to cope with health problems that affect the voice.

Dr. Garnett has been nationally active in education and research including appointments to the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and a member of multiple education committees within the Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is most proud of the six teaching awards he has received for advanced resident education.
