Professional Background

Dr. Drew Emge, MD, MSc, is a native Midwesterner, is interested in the interplay between evidence based medicine, health care delivery, and health care policy. This interest allowed him to create a tailored undergraduate major in Global Health Care and Policy. He initially planned on a career in Infectious Diseases, so he has studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MSc - Control of Infectious Diseases), where he did his dissertation work in Johannesburg, South Africa on HSV/HIV co-infection. He also did a clinical research year in Lusaka, Zambia with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation/Univeristy of North Carolina-Chapel Hill during medical school at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. While subsequently completing his Internal Medicine Residency at Baylor College of Medicine, he realized that his true passion was dermatology. Post-IM residency, he completed a research fellowship in autoimmune and oncodermatology under the guidance of Adela Cardones, MD, at Duke University, where he stayed on for Dermatology Residency. Now at KU, he is a general medical, cosmetic, and procedural dermatologist. His interest areas in dermatology include:

High risk skin cancer (people with high burden due to environmental factors or comorbidities)
Skin cancer and dermoscopy
Skin imaging
Mucosal dermatoses: oral, genital
Medical wounds (inflammatory and infectious) and scars
Immunocompromised patients
Global health and skin NTD
Skin and soft tissue infections
Procedural dermatology: excisions, lasers, neuromodulators

Currently at KUMC, Dr. Emge has launched and runs a Dermatology ECHO program for rural primary care providers throughout Kansas. He's also involved with KU Internal Medicine's Global Health Pathway.
