Ethics of a Pandemic: Lessons Learned from COVID-19

Course Description:

Ethics is always relevant to life but ethical reflection is particularly important during a crisis. The care of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic added many layers of complexity to ethical issues.

From April to June, KU School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Development hosted a series of noon webinars to allow faculty and staff from both KU Medical Center and KU Hospital to explore ethical issues our organizations faced. Based upon that series, we have created this one-hour presentation design to highlight some of the ethical issues faced by all health care professionals and organizations and reflect on lessons learned to improve our collective future response.


Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of the session participants should be able to:
--Discuss surgical challenges in a pandemic
--Discuss decision making processes regarding allocation of limited resources
--Recognize the needs of vulnerable patients and populations in decision making processes
