From the Executive Vice Chancellor
An update from the KU Medical Center Executive Vice Chancellor, Robert D. Simari, M.D.

In many ways, this is a golden age for science and health care in the United States. Scientists are discovering innovative new cures and treatments for disease, and clinicians are providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care to their patients. But at the same time, medical science is facing a credibility crisis that threatens the future of biomedical research and our health care providers’ ability to administer the best care possible for patients.
In this issue of Kansas Medicine + Science, we take a closer look at the growing distrust many Americans have now for science and medicine. You may be surprised to learn that science skepticism did not start with the COVID-19 pandemic — it has actually been around for centuries.
Elsewhere in this issue, you will read about how KU Medical Center is positioning itself to be a hub for obesity research by bringing together researchers and clinicians from different areas to work together; you can learn about how remote patient monitoring is enabling health care providers to track and analyze their patients’ conditions outside of a health care setting; and we explore some of medicine’s most intriguing mysteries.
We always look forward to hearing what our readers think of Kansas Medicine + Science. Please email us at kmands@kumc.edu and let us know!
