Thank you for reading this new issue of Kansas Medicine + Science. In our cover story, we explore the miraculous molecule, the building block of all life on this planet.

KU Medical Center’s basic scientists are studying these tiny structures to see how they can lead to new medical and research breakthroughs. We also take a look at how artificial intelligence is already having a major impact in patient care and biomedical research. And we investigate the growing crisis in primary care in this country and what can be done to alleviate it.

I am proud to let you know that Kansas Medicine + Science was recently recognized for excellence by two major organizations. The magazine was the recipient of a Gold PRISM, the highest-level award possible, from the Public Relations Society of America. Our publication also won the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI award for best university magazine in the Alumni/General Interest category. District VI encompasses all colleges and universities in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. Kudos to our magazine writers, editors, designers and photographers for their outstanding work, and thanks to all of you for reading and supporting our magazine.
