Professional Background

Carolina Quintana, Ph.D., ATC, joined the faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training in the summer of 2022. A clinical assistant professor, her responsibilities include teaching courses within the athletic training program and department.

Prior to her arrival at KU Medical Center, Quintana started her career in academia in 2020 as a faculty member in the master's degree program in athletic training at California State University Fresno. In addition to teaching courses in the Department of Kinesiology, she assisted in efforts to obtain initial CAATE accreditation for the athletic training degree program.

Quintana has extensive clinical experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Additionally, while in Kentucky she served as an athletic trainer in the horse racing industry and provided coverage and services while working to develop and implement a concussion-management program.

Active within the profession as well, Quintana has served on committees at the state and regional levels. Most recently, she was a member of the equity, diversity and inclusion committee in the California Athletic Trainers' Association. Quintana maintains membership to the National Athletic Trainers' Association.

Academic Background

Quintana graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., with a bachelor's degree in athletic training with a minor in biology. She obtained a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from New Mexico State University in 2013 while working as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. In May of 2020 she completed a doctorate in rehabilitation sciences from the University of Kentucky and served as a graduate research assistant in the university's Sports Medicine Research Institute.


Research

Overview

Quintana's scholarly interests include the recovery trajectory following concussion – more specifically the vestibular consequences following sports-related concussion and also maximizing outcomes in this population. More recently, she has started to explore the barriers and facilitators to participation in athletics in special populations.
