Professional Background

Dr. Hanson is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, and EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship Core Faculty with interests in education, research, and prehospital medicine. He completed his EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship at KUMC. During his fellowship, he acquired specific training and certification in Search and Rescue Medicine, Tactical Medicine, and EMS Medical Direction. Dr. Hanson completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Henry Ford Health – Macomb, where he was awarded the Henry Ford Star Award in recognition of exceptional support of his peers and colleagues. He earned his medical degree from Kansas City University, where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

He has presented at regional, national, and international conferences, including TEDx, and is heavily involved in prehospital research. He has served in national leadership roles with the American Medical Student Association, the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association, National Association of EMS Physicians, and the Wilderness Medical Society.

Currently, he serves on-field as sideline Emergency Response Physician for The Kansas City Chiefs/NFL, Co-Director of the Wilderness Medicine Residency Track, EMIG Faculty Leader, and is active in education and leadership at KU School of Medicine. He is double board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Research

Overview

Research interests include emergency medical services and prehospital medicine, field cardiac arrest management and outcomes, search and rescue medicine, trauma, orthopedic injuries, wilderness and special operation medicine, and paramedic/student education. His current focus is on the role of end tidal CO2 in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation. In addition, he serves as Education Section Editor for the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine.
